Collins is a useful player page for beginners because straddled pots make ordinary preflop decisions look more casual than they really are. The table may feel loose, but the math has already changed. The pot is bigger, the effective stacks are smaller, and weak entries become more expensive before the flop is even dealt.
That is the part many newer players miss in action-game clips. A hand that seems playable at normal blind levels can become awkward once the straddle reduces the real depth. If you enter too wide, you may reach the flop with a hand that cannot make strong top pairs, cannot continue on many boards, and still has too much money tied to the pot.
The straddle changes the real game size
The first lesson in a Collins-style hand is to stop thinking only in posted blinds. A straddle increases the amount already in the middle and makes later raises larger in practice. That means your stack does not play as deep as it first appears. A 200-big-blind stack can feel much shallower when the straddle and raise sizes pull the hand into a larger game.
This does not mean straddled pots should scare you. It means your hand selection must tighten around hands that realize equity well. Suited broadways, strong pairs, and hands that can make nut draws are easier to defend than weak offsuit hands that mostly make second-best pairs.
Loose tables still reward disciplined seats
The second lesson is position. A straddled pot creates more action, but it does not remove the value of acting last. If anything, position becomes more important because mistakes are magnified in a larger pot. Calling from a poor seat with a marginal hand may feel like joining the action, but it often creates the exact kind of difficult postflop spot beginners are trying to avoid.
When you review Collins hands, look for who gets to apply pressure after the flop. The player with position and initiative can play wider because they have more ways to win. The player out of position often needs a stronger hand or a clearer plan. That difference matters more than the loose table mood.
What beginners should keep
Before copying a Collins-style straddled hand, recalculate the effective stack and seat first. If the hand would be marginal in a normal pot, it may be worse after the straddle. Action games do not make discipline less important. They make sloppy preflop choices cost more.
